How to redirect http to https in htacccess file

To redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS using .htaccess, you can use the following code snippet:


RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

Steps:

  1. Locate the .htaccess file in the root directory of your website (often public_html/).

  2. If there is no .htaccess file, create one.

  3. Paste the above code at the top of the file.

  4. Save the file and upload it if you’re working locally.

  5. Clear your browser cache and test by visiting your site with http://.

Notes:

  • The [L,R=301] flags mean:

    • L: Last rule to process.

    • R=301: Send a 301 (permanent) redirect to the browser.

  • Ensure that SSL is installed and configured correctly on your server before using this rule.
